In the beginning, in the Era of Struggles, there were 13 Kingdoms, which are different dimensions that are accessible through the Thread, a powerful connection that only a few people an Era have: Firmistek, Magsin, Ertred, NeoPlain, Vintclaw, Walson, Stelmir, Paxia, Alonar, Prime, the Forge, Shaleria, and Taelos. These are ruled over by three supernatural Forces: the Light, the Name, and the Shadows. They have been warring for centures; at the beginning of each Era they create a new set of Kingdoms and begin to war anew. As the millenia in each Era go by, the Forces get stronger until they start involving mortals in their war. After that one Force will defeat the other, and end the Era, creating a new set of Kingdoms and a new Era. No Era knows about the others, and the general populace knows nothing about the existence of other Kingdoms or the Forces.
Kaeron Stormdragon, disciple of the Trinity, decided to try and tear apart the Thread, that thing that binds everything together, and allows a select few people to travel across Kingdoms. To do this he calls upon the power of OBLIVION, god of OBLIVION (his name was erased from memory, so he is only known as his element). He succeeds in summoning his power, but ends up tearing apart the spacetime continuum and Falls through a divine Path (the tunnels between Kingdoms) to the space between Kingdoms, which OBLIVION calls the In-Between, and everyone else calls Nowhere.
Lunyk Stormdragon, half-elf and half-demon, is a simple farmboy in the elf village of Treehaven when a traveling syid named Colyth Coollflame on his way to Bond with a dragon meets him. Lunyk decides to accompany him, and ends up going to Vintclaw (after Bonding with his dragon Akrael) with Akrael, Colyth, and Colyth's dragon Aesik. In Vintclaw, they meet a demon named Jurket Demonblade. He travels with them, intending to rob them, but Lunyk accidentally opens a Path to Taelos, where they meet Drizzt Baenre, drow overlord of a dark druid clan called Seleysnia. Drizzt accidentally impales Lunyk, and while he recovers he learns to be a druid, and Drizzt reveals to him that Kaeron destroyed his family- and that Kaeron is his brother. Lunyk, in his rage, taps into his not-yet-mastered ability to control the Thread, and accidentally opens a "Path"- except this one leads straight down, instead of forward. When the team awakes, they find themselves in an area not unlike a Path, albeit spread-out and purple. Drizzt, thinking his dragon has died, "Bonds" with another dragon, a Void dragon called Mizzet. Then, emboldened by his success, Drizzt decides to try and ressurrect his wife, Vierna, by traveling to the Astral Plane and seeking out her soul. He attempts to do so, but Lunyk tries to stop him and ends up awakening Nox, goddess of death. As the group flees, a young Syid girl by the name of Deet appears and runs with them into the real world. However, Drizzt is trapped and is left behind in the Void. Once the group escapes, Deet is revealed to have no memories, save one: the fact that Kaeron created the Void by manipulating a memory spell, which simulated the Void.
A few nights after, there is a special comet passing by that is promised to name the three warriors of the Trinity. Lunyk becomes the Guardian of Storms, Colyth the Guardian of the Tide, and a dwarf girl named Katryna becomes the Guardian of Flames. However, Kaeron has captured Katryna. They meet a man named Nerv Xra, who was mirrored, and his doppleganger Vren Arx serves Kaeron.
Immediately after, Lunyk sees Deet and Colyth (who have fallen in love) kissing, and thinks about the love of his life, Leksa Doveheart. Little does he know that Kaeron has captured her and is interrogating her to find out where Lunyk and the others are. Lunyk, in his deperation, calls on the goddess of love, Marell, to find her. Marell takes Leksa away, but in the process Kaeron's poison vial is injected into her, and she falls into a coma.
Enraged, Lunyk tries to single-handedly storm Kaeron's keep in Nowhere, but first he has to get to Nowhere. He tries opening a Path, but he accidentally opens one to the Forge of Creation, a new Kingdom where physics are veerrryyy different. During his exile there, Jurket and Colyth try to find a way to get him out. In the process, they find a place known as the Trial Cave, where one can undergo a trial, and if they succeed they become much stronger.
In the meantime: Lunyk uncovers a spell in the Forge that has the potential to eradicate OBLIVION completely; Jurket's love Luara becomes a nature mage; and Drizzt decides to serve Kaeron so he can eventually kill him and take control of Nowhere himself. Lunyk tries using the spell, but as he's only 1/3 of the Trinity, all it does is take him to the closest member, Colyth. They each undergo the Trials in the Trial Cave in NeoPlain: Colyth's is jealousy, and he passes and becomes an Ocean Mage; Lunyk's is rage, and although he almost fails, he passes and gains Leksa's antidote as well as wings as a blessing from WynZefyr, god of storms. During Jurket's trial, it is revealed he used to be a god, and his brother Jerook is the god of Chaos. He passes, and the curse placed on him by the old gods is lifted, revealing he is really an angel.
Deciding it is time to kill Kaeron once and for all, the team splits up to recruit an army. Jurket gets the elves of Magsin, the eaglechildren of Alonar, and the few hidden angels in Vintclaw. Colyth goes to his home Kingdom, Shaleria, and gathers his tribe of Syids; and Lunyk gets the drow of Stelmir and every single person on Firmistek. They meet up in the rubble of Lunyk's home town, Treehaven. From there they open a Path to Nowhere. Storming the castle, it is revealed that Drizzt has been drastically altered by Kaeron, and is now almost completely metallic. He activates his three monsters, the Emissaries, which have the power to destroy even gods. Jurket manages to destroy one, and Colyth endeavors to turn another to the side of good. However, the one remaining is indestructible and kills Deet. Jurket and Luara capture Drizzt, but he dies. Before he does, though, he rips out Jurket's heart. Nerv Xra kills Vren, his doppleganger, but dies. Leksa and Luara die as well. Deciding it is time, Lunyk, Katryna, and Colyth use the spell, Orion's Sign. They use it to try and free Kaeron from OBLIVION's control, but he dies in the process. However, OBLIVION has absorbed enough of Kaeron that he can create a mortal body of his own, and reveals the Axikaro, the staff that can temporarily unravel the Thread. OBLIVION charges it with his energy and prepares to tear apart the Thread for good. However, in the last second, Orion's Sign is finished, and the Light becomes the next leader, and Lunyk becomes the new head god, ends the Era, and recreates the Kingdoms, combining them into one world: Terra.
Terra is a large world, being the only- and thus very diverse- Kingdom of the Reformed Era. Panzer Annax is a simple farmboy, a fox Avani living with his father on his farm. Avani can't normal perform magic, but his family has a treasured heirloom called the Power Rings, three starsilver rings that enhance magical capabilities. Panzer excels at magic with these, despite his race's limitations and his father's disapproval. He is sent on a mission by his village to delivar a message to the other two Avani villages nearby, but along the way he gets intercepted by the god Lunyk, who appears in his dreams and sends him to the Mountain of Hope, a large, fabled mountain in the middle of Terra.
As he nears the mountain he stops in a forest, where a large purple crystal-like meteor crashes into the earth. Out of the rubble emerges Mercurous Lunan, a young man with a raven familiar named Nirvana. He has no recollection of his past save for a small white disc and the memory of the Mountain of Hope, so he sets out with Panzer. They stop in a nearby town to treat Panzer's wounds from the meteor, which impacted into him, and they meet an enslaved Avani girl known as Myra. When they leave, she escapes to follow them. When the group of three reaches the Mountain, they discover a group of advenurers has already gathered there, waiting on them. They are: Venshion Shadowlight, a phantom disciple of Jurket; Damakos Ironarm, a metalborn man created by Drizzt to be his harbinger, but has no recollection of the past 10 years, in which he somehow became leader of a cult that worshipped Drizzt; Derrosan, a Starlight Elemental who was contacted by Astael; Haeronias Naeria, a metalborn woman of high stature who was chosen by Vierna; Harloqh Koalema, a slightly deranged warlock who made a pact with Asharaxian, killing his family in exchange for much power; Agin and Rilla Rippleheart, two brainless Nalleon twins chosen by Colyth; Ire Aeterna, a human with a phoenix familiar named Erina who was cursed by Harloqh to have to walk forever, or else his heart will stop beating; and Naruki, a young human/Avani hybrid. Together, the group explores a secret cavern in the Mountain of Hope. In it lies the fabled HeartStone, a giant crystal that reflects the status of Terra: if it is shining, Terra is okay, and if it is cracking, so is Terra. The group accidentally activates the HeartStone, releasing the embodiments of the Light (Deimos) and the Shadows (Phobos). Before anyone can react, Phobos shatters the HeartStone into 13 seperate shards, which he uses magic to scatter throughout Terra. The team realizes that unless they restore the Stone, Terra will fall apart at the seams, letting the Shadows come in and destroy it, winning this Era. One Jewel lies in the Mountain, and with it Deimos can track the others, but there are still 12 left to find.
While the team recovers from the attack, Mercurous wanders into the forest, where he examines the white disc that is the only relic from his past. He discovers that the words "Smash Me" are engraved in it, so he does. A white mist envelops him, and he turns into a purple crystal-like material, and gains the ability to materialize any sort of weapon made of the same material, as long as he is in the crystal form. He returns to normal shortly after, but with much concentration he can transform into the crystal being.
Using Deimos's ability to track the Jewels, they first go to the Guilds, a city in the north that houses many large adventuring groups. The Jewel shard lies at the top of the Guild Tower, which only the top members in a guild can enter. As they debate what to do, a vampire named Akmenos approaches them. He is an emmisary of Asharaxian, the main devil, and thus has a lot of power that they do not. He joins the group once he swears that he will not sabotage them. Akmenos tries to take over the Fellowship of the Shield, a guild that focuses on defense, but surprisingly is cut off when Mercurous uses poison to kill the leader and takes his place.
The second Jewel gained, they head to a secluded elven village in the east, where the villagers welcome them. They all have oddly colored eyes, however: one is pure white, while the other is night black. It is revealed that the elves have been absorbing the energy from the Jewel, and after they have been defeated Derrosan sacrifices himself to restore energy to the Jewel.
Meanwhile, a young Avani/human hybrid girl named Liahona lives with her salamander familiar named Reginald on an island. She has lived on the island her whole life. Reginald teaches her how to read, and she decides she wants to have an adventure. So she and Reginald build a boat and sail away.
The group splits up. While Panzer, Myra, Harloqh, Akmenos, Agin, and Deimos travel to the Silent Place, the dark, endless, cold underworld lit with nothing but a pale red aurora, to get Derrosan back, Akmenos, Mercurous, Naruki, Ire, Venshion, Haeronias, and Damakos buy a boat and travel to where Deimos sensed the next Jewel lay, out in the ocean somewhere. When Panzer and his team find Derrosan, they find out he found a Jewel on a lost soul and killed them (well, killed their soul) and took it. Meanwhile, Liahona's boat is crashed into by a giant islandfish, and Mercurous's team rescues them. They find out she had a Jewel, but didn't realize its worth and ony carried it as a shiny toy. Panzer opens a Gateway from the Silent Place to the ship, which is then rammed by the islandfish and washes ashore in the beach near a small farm in the middle of nowhere. They offer to stay for a while as they recover, and even work on the farm as they do so, until they discover that the owner of the farm is Leksa's soul imprint, a copy of her made by Lunyk when he created Terra. Living with her was her son- and Lunyk's son- Icarus. It is revealed that he had been given a Jewel by Phobos and was using it to increase his magic in the hopes of one day joining his father. In the fight between Panzer, Lunyk's host, and Icarus, Lunyk's son, a minion of the Shadows bursts into the house and goes on a rampage, killing Leksa. Icarus vanishes, leaving the Jewel behind, although unbeknownst to them he makes a deal with Phobos to help him if he can revive his mother.
As they travel, Liahona notices she has started to hear strange words whispered in her ears. When she says them aloud, strange things happen. Finally she says "Volant Scintillae," and she creates a strangely magical sword that can shoot off sparks. When she uses her new language magic for the first time, she catches the attention of a local dragon called Windscream, who reveals that the sword has a tragic, dragon-murdering past. They also meet a wandering boy named Kaito with a wolf familiar named X. Kaito and X have been wandering ever since they discovered that Kaito's family is made up of werewolves, and Kaito himself is one. Kaito agrees to help them in their journey when he discovers a dalrk secret of Naruki's: she is a lunasol, a type of werewolf that transforms when moonlight touches them.
The group travels until they reach the city of Trose. Rumours of a dark power inhabiting the city have reached their ears, and they think it is the perfect place to look for the next Jewel. They venture into the graveyard to discover that one of the graves has a secret entrance to a deep cavern where a lich, also known as a zombie king, has been reviving the undead through the power of a Jewel. They dispatch him, and retrieve the Jewel.
Now with over half of the Jewels, Deimos's power is stronger, and he is able to lead them directly to a city underwater, inhabited by Merrows. Agin and Rilla use Colyth's power to allow them to breath underwater, and the group sets out to find the Jewel. Suddenly they are attacked by Icarus, who engages Akmenos and Panzer in hand-to-hand combat while the rest of the group is in different locations throughout the city. Akmenos can match him, but tires faster than Icarus. Icarus is slowly gaining the upper ground when Panzer realizes two things: that Icarus has the Jewel on him, and that every time Akmenos, who is a servant of the devils, uses magic, he strengthens the Shadows, that the devils serve. Panzer uses a knife to stab Icarus through the heart. It is the first time he has killed anyone.
Akmenos and Panzer go on alone to one of the final Jewels' location: a lone tower in the heart of the forest near the village where Panzer grew up. It is enchanted so that in order to enter, one must be aligned with the Shadows. In order to gain access, Panzer pledges alliegance to the Shadows. Any time he uses magic or the Spark for now on, he strengthens the Shadows. His lightning marks turn red as blood. After finding the Jewel and fighting Phobos, they return to the group.
They go to the Quickglimmer, a peninsula in the east that is entirely made of metal. The Jewel is being held by the lead Council of Drizzt, which quickly becomes hostile to the team. Damakos uses his powers, though, as the host of Drizzt, and they anoint him as their king. The council gladly relinquishes the Jewel, and Damakos and Haeronias stay to help the area.
Now they lack only one Jewel, but it is proving impossible to find. The team (minus Damakos and Haeronias) return to the Mountain of Hope to see if it might yield any clues, but once they arrive they see it has been overrun by the Shadows' creatures, since it is the central tear in the Kingdom. Naruki, Kaito, Agin, Rilla, and Derrosan fight them off while Panzer, Akmenos, Liahona, Mercurous, and Deimos run to the center cave where everything began. Phobos appears, giving them a choice: he has kept the final Jewel, but it is cursed- the person to take it from him will die. Mercurous is about to take it, since his planet was destroyed so he can be with his family, but Panzer takes it, so he can be with Myra and Liahona and Mercurous can be together.
In the Silent Place, Panzer is disoriented and confused, but since he has the final Jewel, Myra can speak to him from further inside. She gives him a choice- keep the Jewel, die, and doom the Kingdoms forever but finally free himself of the responsibility he always hated, or relinquish the Jewel, complete the HeartStone, live again, but face the responsibility of having to save the world. He decides to complete the HeartStone, although Myra warns him that the fate of their world will not change- that it is doomed to end forever. When the HeartStone is completed, it releases a third being just like the two mirrors- a man named Res, who claims to be the advocate for a third Force, called the Name. According to Res, the Name was sealed away to be released when the Kingdoms started to fall apart. Ironically, the sign for this would be when the Kingdoms were finally joined together as one- as Terra.
The surviving members of the team fight the Shadows as best they can, but to no avail. The Shadows win, destroying Terra by turning its Trinity- Lunyk, Colyth, and Katryna- against it. Only a few, blessed with the powers of the Forces, escaped to the Shattered Era: Akmenos with thoughts of revenge, Panzer's two children, Drizzt's servant Zalykar, and Res, with his powers broken and his memories vanished. Res, almost dead, abandons his body and his Force powers, his soul inhabiting the nearest living thing.
Shona Harkenwing, a young eaglechild with no family, taken in by a local village called Samar, is on a mission to assasinate a neighoring rival clan's leader, who follows the One Who Is, when he finds a curiously shaped amulet in the leader's hut. When he touches it, he opens a Path to the Stormdragon's guild headquarters in Firmistek. The heir of the Stormdragon throne, Derion Stormdragon, tell him that the amulet was there to be found by one whose fate was to destroy the One Who Is, and explains the situation: the One Who Is is seeking revenge on the Shadows for destroying his "old home", and has been building up strength and followers in order to attack and kill the Shadows, taking their place as the second, dark Force. Shona is charged with leading a team of adventurers that he will recruit to stop the One Who Is.
